Counting down to the end …. Eschaton

Standard

The word ‘eschaton’ in Greek means end. Thus we get the theological words ‘eschatology’, ‘eschatological’, which refer to religious beliefs about the end times, in traditional Christian parlance, the four last things, death, judgement, heaven and hell. However, we are now counting down to a different end, which arrives in less than two weeks in Ottawa. And you can read all the details about it right here, which, unlike most of my links, will take you away from this page to the Eschaton2012 page, where amongst other things you will read

The year is 2012 and once again the world is ending. According to the remaining records of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, the 13th Ba’ka’tun will count down and end on December 21st 2012.

While the New Age Spiritualists will be busy hocking their remaining crystal balls and spirit rugs, the Mayans would have rested comfortably knowing that the 14th Ba’ka’tun would begin the very next day on December 22nd.

The Mayans would have marked the end of an Era with a large celebration and true to that spirit, CFI Canada is proud to welcome you to:

  1. No kidding, there are still YouTube nutters who are counting down to Dec. 21, when planet X (or Nibiru) will crash into Earth.

The problem with these proclamations isn’t that they’re objectively wrong. It’s that they’re believed at all by way too many people.

I just hope there isn’t an uptick in senseless “Heaven’s Gate” type suicides in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

And, of course, the media doesn’t do us any favors at all in this regard. One of the movies making the rounds on cable TV is “Melancholia” — a dreadful little dirge about a planet crashing into Earth.

    It only feeds the paranoia.

  2. By my back-of-the envelope calculations Nibiru would have to be less than 100 million km away from us now. That would make it about as bright as Jupiter. Why haven’t we seen it?
